The U.S. State Department has announced that Americans can now renew their adult passports online. This new digital process eliminates the need for paper applications and mailing checks.
The State Department said in a statement, “This online alternative offers the most efficient and convenient passport renewal experience possible. Thanks to increased staffing, technological advancements, and other improvements, the average routine passport is being processed in about one-third the time compared to last summer.”
The online passport renewal system launched in June and is available 24/7. The requirements for renewing a passport online remain the same as for mail renewal, including uploading a passport photo, paying fees, and renewing within a certain timeframe.
Currently, only adult passports can be renewed online, and only those living in the United States can use this new process. Processing time is still six to eight weeks.
