Sayulita in Nayarit Mexico

It is a municipality and magical town in the state of Jalisco, and its name means “On Earth.” Sayulita is a magical town in Riviera Nayarit. Its streets full of colors will make you feel at home. Discover Playa Los Muertos, just 8 minutes from the center of Sayulita and a spectacular beach with turquoise blue waters. In 2015, the town of Sayulita, Mexico, was named a Magical Town, among other reasons for the colorful Huichol art that abounds there.

Every week “El Salvatierra” arrived at the small port of Sayulita in Nayarit, Mexico, where the oil production of the farm was embarked. The first owner of this was Marcial Nuño, but the Cristeros expelled him from the region, and he was forced to sell the property in 1927 to the Camarena family.

The farm continued to grow, and in addition to oil production, it ventured into the livestock sector, becoming an important emporium that was started by the son of Mrs. Ana María Camarena, Mr. Santiago. During this time, many people died of lung disease, caused by inhaling the dust that the coconut gave off when it was split. In 1936, Don Santiago gave the land to the people so that they could continue working on it and in this way prevent the prosperity achieved in this region from collapsing. By then the Camarena had sold all their head of cattle and the government expropriated the lands of the hacienda. Then the Sayulita ejido was born.

Fun Sayulita Things To Do

1- Learn to surf. There is no more popular activity on the Sayulita beaches than conquering its waves aboard a board. Of course, not everyone does it with the same success. Children and adults congregate on the beach to practice. The most skilled can stand up in no time and maintain balance for a few seconds. The rest crash, but the laughs are as constant as their splashes.

2- Climb the Cerro del Mono. To see one of the best sunsets of your life, you must enter the jungle and reach the top of this hill that surrounds the coast of the Magic Town. The ascent begins at six in the afternoon and lasts just over an hour; most of the time you get direct views of the Pacific. In addition, it is impressive to find authentic vertical gardens formed by dense vegetation. When you reach the highest point, the sky is completely dyed in reddish and orange tones.

3- Buy unique souvenirs. For several years, Sayulita in Nayarit, Mexico, has been chosen by national and foreign artists and creatives to show the world his work: clothing, jewelry, and home decorations that you will hardly find anywhere else. Your purchases will likely last several hours, as most stores have their own stamp and a story to tell. You can start at Delfines and Marlin streets, both parallel and a few steps from the beach; They lead to the main square of the town. Locals like Artefakto and Evoke the Spirit are concentrated there. The first brings rustic furniture made with traditional techniques from different regions of Mexico. In the second, the distinctive feature is the cow skulls decorated by Huichol artists, using the technique of “painted with yarn”; In addition, macramé and wool pompoms workshops are given.

4- Discover the Huichol cosmogony. More than 25 years ago, the anthropologist Susana Valadez married the artist of Wixárika origin Mariano Valadez, and they created an organization that seeks to preserve the culture and traditions of this ethnic group. As a result, came the Tanana gallery, which is currently managed by her son Cilau. He himself makes the handicrafts that are for sale, in collaboration with other members of the community. There is jewelry, sculptures decorated with beads and paintings, inspired by Wixárika beliefs.

5- Try the raicilla. After traveling across the country tasting artisanal wines, mezcals and tequila, sommelier Isaías González gathered his favorite drinks in a single establishment: Sayulita Wine Shop. He takes care of you himself, solves your doubts and gives tastings of raicilla, an agave distillate that is produced mainly in Jalisco. Here you will find award-winning wines, distillates from little-known brands, and even cigars.

6- Release turtles. Between June and November, thousands of olives ridley hatchlings hatch in Sayulita and make their way to the sea. Almost daily, between seven and eight at night, liberations open to the public are carried out at the Tortuguero Camp. It is located 15 minutes walking from the center of town. To give you an idea of the natural spectacle that you will see: in each nest there are approximately 100 eggs, and only in the last days of the season around 17 nests are released.

7- Watch the humpback whales jump. We challenge you to manage to hold back the tears of emotion when you see in front of you this immense cetacean that reaches the shores of Riviera Nayarit between December and March. The company La Orca de Sayulita sets up tours of only eight people, guided by a zoologist. The boat is equipped with hydrophones, which allow you to hear these marine giants communicating with each other. Hopefully, you will also find killer whales and dolphins along the way. The experience costs 1,400 pesos per adult.

8- Paddleboard. The town of Lo De Marcos, 20 minutes from Sayulita, is practically unknown by national tourists. Its beach is only visited by American and Canadian retirees, who travel in motor homes and spend long stays here. On this almost virgin coast there are paddleboard tours, a sport that consists of rowing on a surfboard.

9- Sail to Isla del Coral. On a small piece of land, you will find one of the few turquoise beaches in Riviera Nayarit. You should visit it in the morning because it is empty. Tours can depart from Lo de Marcos or the town of Los Ayala (30 minutes from Sayulita) and take almost an hour to arrive. In addition to swimming and sunbathing, the island is perfect for snorkeling. It is inhabited by pelicans and blue-footed boobies. Tours cost 1,800 pesos per person, with MexiTreks.

10- Pizzas facing the sea. Don Pedros is a fit restaurant, under a palapa a few steps from the sand. Like any coastal restaurant, it specializes in fish and seafood. However, several of their dishes make it stand out: Shrimp pizza with bacon and beer shrimp served with chipotle sauce are some of the best. Special mention should be made of the spicy callus sushi and the lobster ravioli.

Of course, if you’d like to come down here and do these activities more often, there are plenty of Sayulita Mexico real estate options for you to look into, and we can help you find them.
