Airlines are liable for more than you might think if your trip goes awry

The Department of Transportation’s new rule is now in effect, ensuring air travelers receive refunds for significantly delayed or canceled flights. If your domestic flight is delayed more than 3 hours or your international flight is delayed more than 6 hours, you’re automatically entitled to a refund.

As Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg stated, “Passengers deserve to get their money back when an airline owes them.” This rule aims to streamline the refund process and eliminate unnecessary hassle for travelers.

New Rule: Refunds for Canceled Flights

The Department of Transportation’s new rule strengthens passenger rights for canceled flights. Airlines are now required to automatically refund passengers for canceled flights, even if alternative flights are offered. Refunds must be issued within specific timeframes and to the original form of payment. This means no more airline vouchers or credits unless the ticket was originally purchased that way.

New Rule: Refunds for Delayed Flights

The Department of Transportation’s new rule also addresses significant flight delays. If your domestic flight is delayed by more than 3 hours or your international flight is delayed by more than 6 hours, you may be eligible for a refund. This applies to both departure and arrival delays.

New Rule: Refunds for Delayed Baggage

The Department of Transportation’s new rule also addresses baggage delays. If your checked bag is delayed for more than 12 hours on a domestic flight or 15-30 hours on an international flight, you may be eligible for a refund of your baggage fees.

New Rule: Fee Reimbursements and Travel Exemptions

The Department of Transportation’s new rule also covers fee reimbursements and travel exemptions:

• Fee Reimbursements: If you paid for services like Wi-Fi, seat selection, or inflight entertainment that were unavailable during your flight, you may be eligible for a refund.
• Medical and Government Travel Exemptions: If you are unable to travel due to a serious communicable disease, you may be eligible for airline credit valid for five years.
